🦠 Babesiosis: A Tick-Borne Parasitic Infection

A tiny tick bite can sometimes transmit more than one disease. Babesiosis is a tick-borne infection caused by microscopic parasites that invade red blood cells. While many people experience mild or no symptoms, the infection can become severe, particularly in older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, or those without a functioning spleen.

HISTORY / OVERVIEW

Babesiosis is caused by parasites of the genus Babesia, most commonly Babesia microti in many regions. The infection is primarily transmitted through bites from infected ticks, although it can rarely spread through blood transfusions or from mother to baby during pregnancy.

  • Combination antiparasitic therapy for symptomatic infection

  • Supportive care, including fluids and treatment of complications

  • In severe cases, hospitalization and, rarely, exchange blood transfusion to rapidly reduce the parasite burden
